Silverlight is more alive than Flash indeed and you still can't do a number of things in HTML5. Lots of the new Windows apps are in fact based on Silverlight and there's a Mono port to Linux, so, it's anything but dead.

Note: "dead to me." I'm living a Microsoft-free life quite happily. Perhaps some day there will be some site so compelling that I have to re-evaluate my refusal to install Silverlight, but it hasn't come along yet.
