The Split is Not Enough: Unicode Whitespace Shenanigans for Rubyists - Coincidentally, I had my own run in over the weekend with non-breaking spaces in stored strings. A somewhat more surgical regex than the one Peter proposes is value = value.gsub(/\u00A0/, " ").
