I spent a lot of yesterday working on the Rails continuous integration story. Well, you know, it was shiny…
I think I might actually be getting this site deployment thing under control.
- ar-extensions 0.8.0 - Extensions for ActiveRecord including to_csv, bulk import, and a pattern for writing more extensions.
- Sass with Rails - Avoiding Disappearing Stylesheets in Production - A good thing to know about dynamic stylesheets.
- Exceptional - Another hosted exception-tracking service for Rails applications, this one in beta.
- Content Management Rails Kit - Commercial code to add a pay wall to a Radiant site.
My initial reaction to Live Mesh is that it’s just another attempt to co-opt the web with a proprietary Microsoft platform, no different conceptually than the original MSN/”Blackbird” (which failed, as you may or may not recall). Perhaps I’ll change my mind later.
- TMTOOLS plugin - For those who want to do some low-level TextMate hacking.
- RubyAMP TextMate Bundle - Adds another grep implementation, better completion, hooks into tail and firing up servers, and other goodies for Rails & Merb developers.
- New in Rails: ActiveResource Timeouts and why it matters - Protect yourself from the vagaries of other peoples’ servers.
- Today - Tiny event & task manager that synchronizes with iCal.
- What’s up in Ruby? - Dedicated search engine based on Ruby community RSS feeds.
- Software as a Service Rails Kit - New bootstrapper that gets you up and running quickly with ActiveMerchant, SSL, multiple levels of accounts - all the stuff under your typical Web 2.0 app. $249 base price.
- Better messages for ActiveRecord validation errors - A tiny bit of fit and finish work for your Rails app.
We now have Rails apps being developed on two developer desktops in this household - another small victory for the forces of light.
- Super-fast bulk data imports in Rails with ar-extensions - There’s a gem out there to make for quicker batches if you’re faced with this problem.
Posting is going to be irregular for a while, I expect: here’s why
- pure class - I’m going to need to use one of these techniques for tracking down things through ActiveRecord extensions soon, I think.
- Twitter4R 0.2.0: Twitter API for Ruby - There are now two different Ruby libraries for accessing the Twitter API. Some people would say that is two too many.
- Connector and Slingshot Open-sourced and Free - The Joyent guys are giving away a big ol’ gob of code.
Yup, I’m still collecting the random linkage…
- Getting started with acts_as_solr - Another way to manage full-text searching in a Rails application.
- Understanding ActiveRecord: A Gentle Introduction to the Heart of Rails - Baby steps with the M in MVC. (via dzone)
- cruise_control.rb campfire plugin - Continuous integration notification to Campfire chatrooms.
- SL Certification - Certification is nearly pointless in RL. I shudder to think about it in SL.
Time to put my money where my links are (to fracture a metaphor) - I’m on the verge of signing a contract to do a small amount of custom Rails work. Exciting and a bit scary.
- Caboose Sample rails application - A starting point intended to save work and demonstrate “better practices.”
- The RADAR Architecture: RESTful Application, Dumb-Ass Recipient - Dave Thomas on REST and related topics. I still need to find time to grok this. Soon.
- Scope Out ActiveRecord Conditions- A way to clean up code that needs to work with conditions in ActiveRecord. Bears investigating. (via Tom)
Sorry about all the RSS goofiness. I managed to complete bork the site and had to redo a batch of things, which didn’t do the feeds any good. Not that I’ve had much luck tracking down the original issue.
- Rails vs. Django - There’s a link here to a Django screencast that I probably should find the time to watch, though overall it confirms my suspicion that the two frameworks are largely equivalent in terms of productivity.
- Softies on Rails Interviews: Menuism - It’s certainly nice for me to read at this point stories of people who walked away from Microsoft to do Rails development.
- File Upload Fu - Mike Clark discusses handling image file uploads in a Rails app.
- Lighthouse - Rails issue tracking app from the Mephisto creators, coming soon.
- TextMate: Power Editing for the Mac - Book from Pragmatic Bookshelf, now released. If I did want to become a TextMate expert, this would probably be a good investment.
- Capistrano 1.4.1 - A minor update to the deployment utility that goes along with Rails.
- Our ActiveRecord book …and YOU! - There’s a book all about ActiveRecord coming. You can go make suggestions about what you’d like to see covered.
